Description

My new long-term restoration project, an International Harvester D1200 Travelette 2wd crew cab, a very rare truck. Found it in Morrisville, NC for $800! Body is in excellent shape, really on a couple of dents, interior floor is rusted out but that's not a big deal for me. Not sure what my plans are for it yet, but it will definitely be diesel and 4wd when I'm through with it. I'm thinking mint green metallic with pearl metallic trim and a triple clear coat for the color. Either that or IH red with white trim like it is now. I've got an 85 chevy cucv for a donor truck, but its such a nice truck I hate to mess it up. I think I'll just try to find another Dana 60 or 70 front axle for this one if I can find out what rear end gears I have and match it. It has an IH corporate RA-15 axle in it now, which is a huge front load diff type. They're actually a licensed copy of an old rockwell design. Whether or not I keep it depends on what kind of locking differential it has or what is available, whether or not I can a matching ratio front axle, and how hard it will be to convert it to disc brake and 8 lug. For the engine I'm either thinking a 6.9 IDI V-8 or a 5.9 cummins I-6. The cummins would fit better, and there is a nice older dodge truck coming up for sale at a local auction with an NV4500 5 speed OD manual and NP205 transfer case, which is my dream setup. If I go with a 6.9 I'll probably use the Borg Warner T-98 4 speed granny that came with the truck, and run a divorced NP205 transfer case with a front mounted overdrive unit. It's looking like the cheaper thing to do is buy the dodge, cause overdive units are expensive. It'll have good axles too, and by the time I strip it and scrap the frame/body and sell my chevy I'll have very little money in this project (I originally bought the chevy for $2000 just for a donor truck, so I include it in my budget. Didn't plan on driving it 5 years! I can probably sell it for 4k and profit). I know I want an E-locker for whatever front axle I get though (much cheaper than air locker). I'm going to have an onboard air system anyway though(either electric or PTO-mounted), since this will be a farm truck, so I might go with an air locker and make the trans airshift too. Gotta be unique haha. Gonna run about a 1" body lift and 3" suspension, sitting on 36" humvee tires.

I've seen some 466 swap threads on the IH forums but that motor is huge compared to cummins. Most people have to move the firewall back 3", plus it weighs damn near 1500'bs dry! A 6bt will fit right in. DT360 is in the dame boat, even though its slightly shorter than a 466 it is the same length. I don't know much about 408s but I imagine they are too big also. I'd like to keep the thing all IH though, I'm looking into some older IH tractor/combine engines in the 5-6 liter range right now.
