Designed to fight alongside the Hermes class Missilestars, the Perseus class Gunstars serve a close-quarters battle role, circling a basestar while pounding it with its 12 side-facing capitol-bore guns and putting up a massive flak screen with its 12 side-facing medium-bore guns to deal with raiders. All this is happening while the Hermes is firing a barrage of missiles at the basestar from a different axis, usually at the poles (above and below). With both ships working in tandem, there is simply no way that raiders can stop all the Hermes' missiles, and the basestar's flak screen cannot stop all the Perseus' incoming shells. If the ship takes too much damage on the side it's circling on, it can simply switch sides and continue fighting.

While the Hermes has limited fighter capabilities, the Perseus has no fighters, not even a hangar bay. It is strictly a battleship, all guns. It does carry a few missiles, but most of these are to aid the small guns in dealing with enemy fighters.

It does have one trick up it's sleeve though, and that's 2 forward fixed very large bore guns, similar to those used on the pegasus class ships. Just a few hits from those to a basestar's axis and its toast.

It has 6 engines, all of the Hermes class. Although it has fewer engines than the Hermes, it is faster due to it's smaller size.
